Abstract: This paper proposes a compact pattern and frequency reconfigurable circular microstrip patch antenna that uses PIN diodes for switching purpose. A total of six PIN diodes are used to electrically connect and disconnect a slotted annular ring to a circular slotted core patch for the purpose of increasing the effective radius of the whole patch thus shifting the resonant frequency. A Defected Ground Structure (DGS) is used to improve frequency bandwidth move the resonant frequency to a lower value. The applications in which this design can be used are in many fields of wireless communications. Ansys HFSS (High Frequency Structural Simulator) is used to design and analyze the results of this antenna.
